Winemaker Notes

The 2021 Kiwa by Escarpment Single Vineyard Pinot Noir (Martinborough, Wairarapa, New Zealand) is a quintessentially Martinborough Pinot Noir, crafted from mature vines on the region’s famous alluvial terraces. It shows a restrained, savory style with lifted spice and supple tannins. Aromas of smoky meat, cherries, and wild herbs mingle with notes of laurel, green tea, and Chinese five spice. The palate is fresh and elegant, with a long, balanced finish that carries both depth and finesse. Almost Burgundian in character, this wine pairs beautifully with game dishes and has excellent cellaring potential over the next 5–8 years.

About Winery

Escarpment Winery was founded in 1998 in Martinborough, Wairarapa, New Zealand, by acclaimed winemaker Larry McKenna—often referred to as “The Prince of Pinot.” McKenna, already well-known for his work at Martinborough Vineyard, partnered with Australian investors Robert and Mem Kirby to establish the estate along Te Muna Road. Their vision was to craft Pinot Noir that could rival Burgundy while showcasing the unique character of Martinborough’s ancient alluvial soils and cool climate. Over the past 35 years, Escarpment has built a reputation as one of New Zealand’s leading Pinot Noir producers, while also making Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Gris, all reflecting the distinctive terroir of the region.
