Santa Cruz Mountains AVA: Where Rugged Terrain Meets World-Class Wines

Tucked between Silicon Valley's tech scene and the Pacific Ocean lies one of California's most alluring wine regions: the Santa Cruz Mountains. The Heritage of Santa Cruz Mountains Wineries

The Santa Cruz Mountains’ winemaking legacy began in the early 20th century when pioneers like Paul Masson planted the region’s first vineyards using cuttings from Burgundy. This early foundation set the stage for a tradition of excellence. 

In 1981, the Santa Cruz Mountains became one of the first AVAs to be defined by its mountain topography, with boundaries following the fog line along the ridges.

The Santa Cruz Mountains are recognized for producing wines of exceptional quality. Martin Ray, often considered the father of modern California winemaking, established Mount Eden Vineyards in the 1950s, setting new standards for the region. Today, the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA is home to over 200 vineyards, united by their passion for crafting wines that reflect the unique terroir of this mountainous region.

Where the Mountains Meet the Sea

The Santa Cruz Mountains AVA spans nearly half a million acres, stretching from San Francisco in the north to Watsonville in the south. This diverse region is characterized by its proximity to the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, creating a calm, maritime climate ideal for growing premium wine grapes.

The Santa Cruz Mountains vineyards are planted at elevations ranging from 400 to 2,600 feet above sea level, with many situated above the fog line. This elevation and the ocean’s cooling influence result in a long growing season that allows grapes to develop complex flavors while maintaining acidity.

Signature Grape Varieties and Wine Styles

The Santa Cruz Mountains AVA is renowned for producing world-class Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. These varieties thrive in the region’s cool climate and diverse soils, producing wines with remarkable depth and complexity.

Chardonnay
Chardonnay from the Santa Cruz Mountains tends to be crisp and clean, with refreshing mineral flavors and judicious oak use. 


Pinot Noir
Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir is known for its ageability and is frequently compared to those from Burgundy, balancing Old World finesse and New World fruit.


Cabernet Sauvignon
The eastern slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains receive more warmth and sunlight, making them ideal for producing robust Cabernet Sauvignon. 


The Santa Cruz Mountains AVA also produces excellent Merlot, Zinfandel and a range of other varieties that showcase the region’s diversity.
