Dominus Wine: A Place of Uncommon Power and History

Dominus Wine: A Place of Uncommon Power and History

The Napanook vineyard is nestled in a natural amphitheater at the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains on the west side of the Napa Valley. Fed by winter rains, its underground springs flow through ancient riverbeds and provide a natural supply of water to its grapevines, allowing them to develop deep roots.

Over centuries this fertile benchland’s microclimate has provided ideal conditions for crops and grape growing.

It was here, in 1838, that George Yount planted Napa Valley’s very first vines.

A Deep Connection To This Land

We are custodians of this historic ranch.

Our goal is to create ideal conditions for growing grapes by nurturing a vibrant, organic soil, fostering natural flora and fauna, and dry farming proactively.

The Napanook vineyard encompasses 134 acres, 102 of which are presently planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.  Its gravelly clay loam soils gently slope 3-10%, ensuring natural drainage.

Adaptive Viticulture

Wine is the product of a living ecosystem. Each decision we take in the vineyard determines the quality of the wine. We constantly refine our viticultural practices to adapt to evolving climate conditions. We are committed to creating a place where grapevines, wildlife, vegetation and man can thrive together for generations to come.

Land remains fallow for a minimum of 4 years before replanting. Custom cover crops are selected for each parcel. Precise canopy management allows the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. Green harvest encourages balanced crops. During ripening, fruit is tasted daily. Grapes are rinsed before harvest to eliminate dust and to achieve purity. Fruit is harvested by hand with French shears. Small harvest baskets keep the fruit fresh and whole.

Sustainability

The Napanook vineyard is organically and sustainably farmed.

Dominus Estate is engaged in a long-term campaign of environmental restoration and biodiversity. Our ranch is planted throughout with native species and wildflowers and provides refuge for California wildlife. After an extensive renewal, the Hopper Creek has become a thriving ecosystem and today Dominus Estate’s work is considered a model of creek restoration in the Napa Valley.
